An interview with Chuck Hersh

Tell us a little about yourself.

My experience with digital Photography began in 1991 while working in the advertising industry. I developed my skills in graphic design and Photoshop and learned how to get an accurate color workflow from camera to print, and everything in between.

I honed my skills and developed an artistic eye by photographing thousands of paintings for reproduction, web and catalog printing where accurate color correction is critical.

That background has enabled me to take an artistic approach to the marketing photos I provide to my Architectural and Realtor clients.

How would you describe your photographic style?

My style can be described as clean, crisp and artistic. Working in the art markets and being involved in wildlife photography for the last 18 years , I have developed an artistic approach to my photography.

What style of photography do you do? Do you use the standard HDR (high dynamic range) process that most real estate photographers use?

This is an interesting question. The standard practice that most photographers use, HDR, they capture a number of images without the use of lights and let the computer blend the images together.

I find this to be an inferior method to what I use. I set up lights on stands and capture the room in clean controllable lighting and hand blend the images along with the use of an ambient frame (room lighting) using photoshop
to deliver much superior photographs to my clients.

How important is Photoshop or digital editing to your process?

Extremely. The images that are captured need to be edited and developed. Photoshop is the main program that allows photographers to do just that. I have been using photoshop since its inception.

It allows me to edit the images for accurate exposure and color. It also gives me the ability to use my artistic and creative talents.

What do you enjoy most about photographing real estate, architecture and the built environment?

I have done just about most kinds of photography. I have even photographed fitness models. When photographing architecture and real estate, a sofa is not going to ask me, “Do my cushions look fat?”

All kidding aside, I find photographing images of buildings and interiors quite satisfying and gives me the ability to capture beautiful and artistic images that can be used to show off my clients work and help market their properties.

What has been the most memorable photo shoot you’ve ever done?

I would say my first RE photo shoot. I had never done a RE shoot before and my first shoot was an estate home for a very famous NFL football player. I guess I got started at the top.

What advice would you give to someone in the Boca Raton area who was selling their home?

Use a real estate agent that uses a high end professional photographer.

What do you like to do away from work?

I would say most of my time is working. But when I do find some time off, I like to hit the gym or the beach.
