An interview with Bryant Payden
Tell us a little about yourself.
I started my Photography career in 1995 apprenticing with a Wedding Photographer on Capitol Hill in Washington DC.
After a few years I opened my own studio in Southern MD until I moved back home to Hampton Roads, Virginia and rebuilt my studio business.
After several years in Hampton Roads we expanded back to The Washington DC area and now have offices in Manassas and Hampton. We serve all of
Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland, The Outer Banks of North Carolina and travel extensively shooting for clients.
How would you describe your photographic style?
Creative realism with an emphasis on technical detail.
What’s your standard workflow when doing real estate photography, from arrival at the location through to delivery of the images?
When I first arrive to a property I always take the time to interact with the homeowner and Realtor so everyone is relaxed and on the same page as far as expectations for the final images.
I walk the property and formulate my plan for the final images. After I capture the images I will return to the office, review the images, edit and process the images to match the vision of the homeowner-Realtor as well as my own artistic vision of the property.
I deliver most properties within 48 hours and then follow up with the Realtor to ensure their complete satisfaction with the images.
How important is Photoshop or digital editing to your process?
My real estate photography is based on realism and showing the property in its best light. The only digital editing we do is to ensure the technical aspects of the image are perfect. I will also cosmetically improve certain images as needed, such as replacing a gray sky with blue if I shot on a rainy overcast day. I do not alter anything structurally in the image as I want viewers to have a fair representation of the actual property.
What do you enjoy most about photographing real estate, architecture and the built environment?
I enjoy the technical challenges of different lighting and compositional situations that are much different from my wedding and portrait photography.
What has been the most memorable photo shoot you’ve ever done?
Living and working in the Washington DC area I have had the opportunity to shoot several properties of famous or notable people. One particular property was an author that was working on a historical fiction novel. Being an avid amateur historian myself it was hard to pull myself away from talking history with the homeowner to return to shooting his stunning estate.
What advice would you give to someone in Northern Virginia who was selling their home?
First and foremost hire an experienced Realtor that is passionate about his profession and understands the value and importance of marketing your home to the right buyers for the best price.
What do you like to do away from work?
When I’m not working I enjoy working on personal photography art projects, college football, reading and traveling with my wife and children.
